Hulegu Khan, Genghis Khans’s grandson, inaugurated the second Mongol invasion of the west. In 1256 he conquered Iran and in 1258 the city of Baghdad, the center of the caliphate. In 1260 however he was prevented from further progress by Mamluks in Syria.
